Among beach destinations in Southeast Asia, Krabi stands out for beautiful scenery and genuinely nice people. Although Ao Nang is touristy, you do not have to travel far to find a slice of authentic Thailand. Our shop is based in an authentic village community only 10 minutes drive from Ao Nang.

In many tourist areas of Thailand, particularly in the South, extensive development has made such places rare to find. But the area surrounding Ao Nang is a great balance between tourist convenience and genuine Thai culture.

Our dive shop is located 10 minutes from Ao Nang in a quiet village. We are a small, family-run shop offering all PADI courses, fun diving, and snorkeling packages.

Our Story

Sea Gypsy Divers, open since October 2017, is managed by Meggy Rizza and Joel Gerstman. Our story is of a husband and wife couple whose life passion is scuba diving. We met at Koh Tao, another of Thailand’s famous scuba destinations. Joel was a full-time Instructor and Meggy was just starting her Divemaster training.

As luck would have it, Joel’s manager played cupid by assigning him to teach Meggy’s Rescue course. A few years and one underwater proposal later, here we are in the Ao Nang area of Krabi continuing to live our dream.

Never tried diving before and want to give it a shot, before committing to getting your Open Water Certification? The Discover Scuba Diving program is for you.

Completed in one day, you will first be introduced to basic scuba diving theory, then practice some skills in-water, and finally, get to enjoy two open water dives in the beautiful sites of Koh Phi Phi island.

A maximum of two students per instructor ensures you will be safe and easily attended to. If you like, you may choose to complete a pool session the day before to practice. The Ao Nang and Koh Phi Phi areas offer beautiful scuba diving and ideal depth and conditions for Discover Scuba Dive participants.

Sample schedule

  • Day 1: Free pick up in the morning from your hotel to the boat pier for a full day on the boat (7:30 am – 5:30 pm) to Koh Phi Phi. On the way to the islands, your Instructor will brief you on the scuba diving theory. After that, you will complete a shallow-water skills session, followed by two open water dives. The maximum depth is 12 meters, and you will be under the direct supervision of an Instructor. Breakfast, lunch, snacks, soft drinks and water are included.

Sample schedule (including pool practice)

  • Day 1: Afternoon – Free pickup from your hotel to Sea Gypsy Divers. At the shop, you will meet your Instructor. Your Instructor will brief you on scuba diving theory, after which you will complete skills practice in the pool.

  • Day 2: Free pick up in the morning from your hotel to the boat pier for a full day on the boat (7:30 am – 5:30 pm) to Koh Phi Phi. You will complete two open water dives to a maximum depth of 12 meters under the direct supervision of an Instructor. You will not need to practice any additional skills, simply enjoy the dives. Breakfast, lunch, snacks, soft drinks and water are included.

Maybe you’ve tried scuba diving before and loved it. Or, maybe you haven’t tried but have heard from others how great it is. Either way, if you are ready to take the plunge and become a certified diver, the PADI Open Water Diver course is for you.

As a holder of the world’s most recognized scuba diving certification, you will be able to dive in any open water environment up to 18 meters in depth. The certification is good for life and never expires.

The course consists of classroom theory sessions, pool training, and a series of four open water dives. It can be completed in a minimum of three days. Small group sizes (max four students per instructor) ensure sufficient attention and safety for everyone.

During the course, you will experience the rich abundance of beautiful marine life in the Ao Nang and Koh Phi Phi areas.

Sample Schedule

  • Day 1: Morning – Free pickup from your hotel to Sea Gypsy Divers. You will meet your Instructor, who will introduce scuba theory in the classroom. You will complete Knowledge Reviews and Quizzes to ensure your understanding of the material.
    Afternoon – You will practice skills in the swimming pool with your Instructor until proficient.

  • Day 2: Free pick up in the morning from your hotel to the boat pier for a full day on the boat (7:30 am – 5:30 pm) to Koh Phi Phi. You will complete two open water dives to a maximum depth of 12 meters under the direct supervision of an Instructor. Breakfast, lunch, snacks, soft drinks and water are included.

  • Day 3: Free pick up in the morning from your hotel to the boat pier for a full day on the boat (7:30 am – 5:30 pm) to Koh Phi Phi. You will complete your final two open water dives to a maximum depth 18 meters under the direct supervision of an Instructor. Breakfast, lunch, snacks, soft drinks and water are included.

Fortunately for us divers, the same can be said for the beauty underneath the waters. For this reason, the Phi Phi Islands are our main dive destination. Here are sites that offer perhaps the best chance to see turtles and blacktip reef sharks. The macro life is superb as well, boasting a wide variety of nudis and shrimps. Colorful soft corals blanket many of the sites we visit here.

Wreck dives

For the more experienced divers, there is the possibility to explore two wrecks located close by. Here the currents can become strong, but you will be rewarded with an abundant variety of fish and corals that have transformed the wrecks into thriving reefs.

Bida Islands

Our Phi Phi trips may also go to the nearby Bida Islands, with world-class sites boasting sharks, turtles, abundant macro, colorful corals, and huge schools of fish.

Dive trips to the Phi Phi Islands leave early morning and return late afternoon, and depart daily (weather permitting).

Enjoy two dives at the beautiful sites of Koh Phi Phi, which feature life such as turtles, blacktip sharks, moray eels, blue-spotted stingrays, pufferfish, nemos, barracudas, nudibranchs, shrimps, etc.

What to expect?

We see turtles, blacktip reef sharks, leopard sharks, nudi branches, sea horses, pipefish, stingrays, cuddlefish, scorpionfish, shrimp and crab varieties, etc. Even whale sharks can pass through these waters.

There are as many as 30 distinct dive sites distributed throughout the areas of the local Ao Nang islands and Koh Phi Phi islands.
