The course is split up into three parts:

Theory - During the theory part of the course you will learn about the basics of scuba diving including how to set up your dive equipment and how to stay safe underwater. This is usually performed in a classroom with your dive instructor. You will be required to complete some knowledge reviews and you will need to pass a multiple-choice exam.
Enclosed Water Sessions - This usually takes place in the swimming pool and will give you the chance to get used to your dive equipment and learn the basic scuba skills that are needed before you enter into the underwater world.
Open Water Dives - In order to pass the Open Water Diver course you will need to complete four open water dives which usually take place in the sea. Depending on your location they may take place in a lake or quarry. You will be expected to show that you understand the basic dive skills during your open water dives.

In order to take part in the SSI Open Water Course you need to be at least 15 years old. If you are aged between 10 and 14 you can enroll in the SSI Junior Scuba Programs. Once you have completed the Open Water Diver Course you will be eligible to dive in waters of up to 18 meters (60 feet) deep.

What you will learn during the The SSI Advanced Open Water Course?

The main aim of the Advanced Open Water Diver course is to increase your scuba knowledge and your confidence under the water. You will be taught about the psychological effects of deep diving and how to stay safe when you descend below 18 metres.

You will also learn about how to navigate the underwater world correctly. Each speciality that you choose will involve one dive which can later be put towards the individual speciality courses if you wish.

If you opt to take the Advanced Open Water Diver Course you will branch out into five scuba specialities. Two of these are deep diving and underwater navigation and the other three are completely up to you.
