Liquid is a family run PADI 5* IDC dive resort in Tofo, Mozambique: Africa's most famous dive destination, where conservation meets adventure.

Tofo diving is special, there are not many places in the world where you can see the 'Big Stuff', Humpback Whales, Mantas, Whale Sharks, Turtles, Rays, Dolphins and Sharks.

Tofo's biodiversity is one of the biggest attractions and conditions can stretch and challenge our divers. There are times that our deep dive sites can be subject to currents, and our shallow sites can be affected by surge. The conditions change daily and are difficult to predict which makes it exciting! We take each day as it comes, and stay flexible with our dive timetable and dive site choices. Your safety is our priority: our dives and training are personalised and conducted in small groups.

What You Will Learn

During the PADI Scuba Diver course, you will learn the basics of scuba diving. The course consists of three pool training sessions and two open water dives (ocean dives). You will also need to complete three knowledge reviews, which you can do online before you travel.

Certified as A PADI Scuba Diver, Now What?

Once you have obtained the PADI Scuba Diver certification, you are eligible to dive up to 12 meters (40 feet) under the direct supervision of a Divemaster or Instructor. You can also participate in a variety of other dive activities, as long as you are supervised correctly.

Continue with a PADI Open Water Diver Course

If you wish to continue your diving education, you can credit your PADI Scuba Diver qualification towards the PADI Open Water Diver course, thus saving time and money.

To upgrade your certification, you will simply have to complete the remaining parts of the PADI Open Water Diver course, including two pool training sessions, two open water dives, two knowledge reviews, and pass a multiple-choice exam.

What You Will Learn

The PADI Open Water Diver course is designed for complete beginners who have no prior diving experience. This course combines dive theory with practical exercises, setting the foundations for every diver’s life-long journey underwater.

The PADI open water diver course is split up into three parts:

Theory - During this part of the course, you will learn about the basics of scuba diving, such as how to set up your equipment and about dive safety standards. The theory is usually done in a classroom with your dive instructor, but you can save time from classroom dive theory and study at your own pace with PADI eLearning.
You will be required to complete knowledge reviews, and you will need to pass a multiple-choice exam.
Five Confined Water Sessions - These usually take place in the swimming pool, where you will get familiar with your dive equipment and get accustomed to breathing underwater. You will learn basic scuba skills that are needed to comfortably enter the underwater world.
Four Open Water Dives - To pass the PADI Open Water Diver course, you will need to complete four open water dives. Depending on your location, they may take place in the ocean, or even in a lake or quarry. You will be expected to show that you understand the basic dive skills during your open water dives.

Project AWARE

We don’t only teach you to dive, but also how to protect our oceans and reefs. Within this course you also get a Project AWARE specialty that counts towards your Master Scuba Diver rating.

What You Will Learn

The main goal of the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course is to increase your scuba knowledge and confidence in your diving skills. You will also learn more about the psychological effects of deep diving and how to stay safe when you descend below 18 meters (60 feet).

You will broaden your interests through five different adventure dives. Two of these adventure dives are mandatory: Deep Diving and Underwater Navigation. The other three specialties are entirely up to you.

You understand the devastating impact that trash has on our ocean environments, but you also know the important role that scuba divers play in preventing, removing and reporting debris found underwater.

Certified as A PADI Advanced Open Water Diver, Now What?

As a certified PADI Advanced Open Water diver, you are qualified to dive to a maximum depth of 30 meters (100 feet). This allows you to explore many more dive sites anywhere in the world!

Plus, if you particularly enjoyed an adventure dive, you can choose to pursue it further with a specialty course. The good news is, the dive that you completed during the course will go towards the first dive of your specialty course.

Who Can Start the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course?

To enroll in this PADI course, you will need to be a certified PADI Open Water Diver (or the equivalent from a different dive school) and be at least 15 years old.

If you are between 12 and 14, you can take the PADI Junior Advanced Open Water course, but you’ll be limited in your choice of adventure dives.

There will be a full briefing of your dive, including the boat launch and full safety procedures. Our dives sites are all blue water drops and always take place with a reel and a surface marker for safety.

We often spend mornings on a 'double tank' dive where we take advantage of being at some of the further away dives and have two dives one after each other with the surface interval on the boat. We provide water, coconuts and peanuts on board each of these double tank dives, to keep you going out at sea.

During surface intervals at sea we often get to meet whale sharks and other marine life and take the time to snorkel and swim.

Through our trips we aim to increase awareness of the environmental importance of these precious animals and marine conservation efforts more generally. This way we strive to ensure that Tofo continues to be a special place to see whales and other amazing but sadly endangered megafauna. We encourage our whale tour participants to get involved in the conservation work focused on these elegant giants and contribute to important ongoing research work.

We make sure that we have as little impact on these intelligent mammals as possible and that all our customers respect them and their marine habitat.

PADI Humpback Whale Specialty & Watching Tour

Liquid’s Whale Watching tour is part of PADI Humpback Whale Specialty course, only done at Liquid in Tofo. The specialty is a half day experience that starts with a lesson about the magnificent whales of Tofo. Your guide will also fully brief you about our boat launching procedures, codes of conduct and how we interact with the whales.

During our time at the sea, we observe several groups of whales, listen to their singing through hydrophone, try to take ID pictures of their flukes and learn more about their behavior and conservation.

If our experienced guide sees the opportunity to swim with these intelligent mammals you may enter the water with them. There is however a strict code of conduct and we can never guarantee swimming with them, safety comes first. Seeing them from the boat is already a magical experience.

Your tour ends with debriefing and sharing photos and experiences.
