Dive Costa Rica

Scuba diving in Costa Rica the is most exciting during the rainy season which runs from June through to December as this is when the level of nutrients in the water swells and vast numbers of hammerheads as well as other marine life is attracted to the region.

Costa Rica lies in a region that is prone to changeable weather due to its location close to the equator. For those looking to take advantage of the calmer seas their visits should be planned for between December and May when the waters are a little calmer.

Dive sites range from those suitable for the novice as well as the more experienced diver as the dive sites here hold something to grab almost any divers attention. There are approximately twenty dive sites to choose from ranging from drift dives to vertical wall dives.

The waters around Costa Rica are a Marine National Park and care should be taken when diving to ensure that no damage occurs to the marine environment. The scalloped hammerheads are the big draw for divers however white tip reef sharks, tiger and guitar sharks are also to be found in the region along with a variety of rays.

Join us daily for local diving and explore the Pacific. The Gulf of Papagayo offers some of the Pacific Ocean most interesting marine diversity. The plankton-rich waters support numerous species from big to small.

What to expect?

On any given day you may see big schools of fish. For the macro lovers, we have many types of small nudibranchs, clown shrimp and more.

But also big pelagics, like spotted eagle rays, stingrays, white tip or nurse sharks are very common. You might have a lucky encounter with the giant manta rays. Big Turtles, or a passing whale shark. and Dolphins are also a common sight during the boat ride. Therefore making local diving very interesting.

Our favorite dive site is Tortuga, where we have a small wreck and usually many sharks, but one can also find seahorses, clown shrimp, nudibranchs, Moray eels and big schools of fish.

Beginners and advanced divers

Our dives are suited for beginners as well as advanced divers. All our trips are lead by PADI Instructors and max 4 divers per guide.

Visibility and temperature

The Pacific is unpredictable with visibility and temperature. We can have warm waters to 28C/82F but it can cool down a lot if the wind picks up. Visibility ranges from 30 m/100ft to 5m/15ft but when the visibility is low the water is very nutritious with plankton and we will encounter many different types of rays and hopefully Whales or a whale shark.

The reefs are a volcanic rock so don’t expect beautiful corals but we are sure the abundance of colorful fish will make up for it and you will have an awesome dive.

Daily departure, different sites

  • Every day our boats leave for a 1,2 or 3 tank dive to our local dive sites.

  • We offer over 20 different sites.

  • On the boat, we serve snacks, fruit, and drinks.

  • Boats leave at 8 am and return around midday.

  • If you are doing the 3 tank dives lunch will be provided and return time is estimated around 2 pm.

The Catalina Island

We offer the Catalina Island (Isla Catalinas) Tour from November to May.

This tour offers a great opportunity to dive with Pacific Giant Mantas, huge schools of fish, several species of sharks and other rays, and much more!

The boat ride is about one hour long and includes two tanks of diving (minimum of four divers to create a trip). We also offer the option to add a third tank to the trip (includes a homemade lunch during the surface interval).

Although peak manta season in Catalina is from November until May, we are able to organize dive trips to the islands year-round – the sites provide loads of marine life and stunning topography.

Diving the Bat Islands (3 dives)

USD $ 195

Diving the Bat Islands (Murcielago)

The Bat Islands are considered a world-class dive area. Diving here is reserved for advanced divers. Before you can dive here, you must be able to swim in strong currents, rough surface conditions, and make quick descents. If you are advanced certified, it is really a dive that can’t be missed. Murcielago is really the premiere scuba destination in Costa Rica. The area is located in the Santa Rosa national park, which is a protected area and divers are asked to pay a $15 park fee.

Murcielago diving is of course for Certified Divers Only. We require, seen the diving conditions that you’re a PADI Advanced Diver (or equivalent). We might take you on a local dive in the days leading up to the Bat Islands tour, to make sure we can guarantee you a safe dive there, based on your current level.

What can we see?

One can anticipate face to face encounters with massive bull sharks which we find most often at a dive site called Big Scare. The dive is a free descent without a line and max depth is 30m/100ft. This is one of the few spots on the planet where one can encounter this magnificent shark. Another common marine species is the Giant Manta which we seem to encounter more and more the last couple of years. The second dive site is Black Rock and this is divers heaven. Because of big schools of fish including spotted eagle rays and many other types of rays.

Our stable boat will take you across the Papagayo Gulf. Take into account we always have to check the winds before we go as these trips can be rough. The best time of the year is from May until November. It takes us about 1 hour to get from Playas del Coco to the Bat Islands – Islas Murcielagos. Our boats have an area in the shade, shore communication systems, oxygen, and a first aid kit. And of course, we have refreshments and fresh fruits on board. When we’re taking you on a three tank dive here, we’ll also serve you a light lunch on board.

Brenda, one of the course directors at Rich Coast Diving, is the author of the PADI AWARE Bull Shark Speciality. So, what team is better informed and trained than ours to get you out there, up close and personal with these beautiful animals?
