ABOUT US

La Galigo is a premier diving Liveaboard that operates in Indonesia at some of the most popular diving locations in the world, Komodo, Raja Ampat and Wakatobi are among some of these fantastic diving destinations. Indonesia has some of the highest Biodiversity on the planet and is home to The Coral Triangle.

La Galigo was conceived back in 2014 when two avid divers wanted to explore some of the pristine reefs in Indonesia but found existing Indonesian liveaboard choices were often out of budget. Nowadays liveaboard diving is very much friends and family affair, and they identified a niche in the market to provide a fun, comfortable, affordable, liveaboard adventure.

La Galigo was acquired in Bali, a beautiful purpose built ‘Phinisi’ style dive Liveaboard, handcrafted by the Bugis people of Southern Sulawesi.

We pride ourselves on our Indonesian crew, who have collectively spent many years sailing and diving around a significant number of the 18,000+ stunning islands that make up Indonesia.

Our schedule is primarily split between Raja Ampat and Komodo, though we offer the opportunity to dive, Wakatobi, Banda, Ambon, Maumere, Alor and beyond. We are predominantly a dive liveaboard but enjoy tailoring bespoke charters that our guests desire.

We often include land excursions as part of our trips, so our guests get to experience the beauty of the islands as well as marvel at the underwater world.

RAJA AMPAT DESTINATIONS

We offer liveaboard trips to Raja Ampat North, Raja Ampat South and to all of Raja Ampat.

Raja Ampat North - Our Raja North trip takes in the key elements of what makes the area recognized as one of the top dive destinations in the world. Trek the iconic limestone cliffs which have become synonymous through their photos, and dive on stunning healthy reef systems teeming with fish.

Raja Ampat South - Raja South takes in what many marine experts consider to be the jewel of the 4 Kings, Misool. Coral life in this part of the Regency is some of the healthiest, most diverse on the planet.

Ultimate Raja Ampat - We also offer the ultimate Raja Ampat Liveaboard trip. This trip takes in all the wonders that Raja Ampat has to offer, in one sitting. No other liveaboard covers the nautical miles that La Galigo does through this trip. From the stunning coral in Misool, to the limestone rock formations in Wayag, this trip really covers it all.

Trip itinerary can be subject to changed in the event of adverse weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances

Itinerary looks as follows

  • DAY 1: Sorong - We will collect you from the airport or your hotel between 7am – 8am on the day of departure. From the collection point we will head to the harbor where we will then transfer to La Galigo. After a refreshing welcome drink, and a safety briefing of our ship, we will aim to anchor up around 10:30am from the harbour. We will then head to our first dive site near Mioskon. Here we will perform a check out dive on beautiful reefs covered in coral, with amazing critters, and clear warm water to ease you into the trip. Dive sites on this day can be affected by several variables, including currents and clearance times in relation to the harbourmaster. After two dives we relax for our first Dinner together and an overnight cruise to the Penemu.

  • DAY 2: Penemu - Whilst in Penemu we will conduct 3 dives, allowing us time to trek the outlook of Bintang lagoon. Dive sites visited will depend on the conditions but we never miss a chance to dive the site made famous by Max Ammer, Melissas garden. The large colourful reef system at the top of the dive site, with its thousands of Anthias dodging predators is what gives Melissa’s garden its name. There is also and an opportunity to dive Kerou channel, which is located close to Leo’s reef, a fish breeding farm funded by Hollywood legend, Leonardo DiCaprio. Overnight we sail to the northern most part of Raja Ampat, and what awaits is one of the most breathtaking sceneries in Indonesia.

  • DAY 3: Pulau Wayag - You awake in the morning cruising between limestone formations on the way to the now infamous lookout of Mt. Pindito. This small mountain has become synonymous with Raja Ampat, and the bay is also home to a Manta breeding station. The best time to hike this hill is early morning, before temperatures rise, but the rewards for climbing are well worth it. The beaches here are also pristine, with fine white sand and turquoise waters surrounding the limestone cliffs of the islands. After trekking, we will endeavor to dive either Way-out-Rock or Figure 8 Rock, both submerged pinnacles home to large pelagic fish, and the occasional passing Manta. While you have lunch, the boat will cruise to the eastern side of Wayag. Here is where we plan to dive the legendary dive site, Cathedral, which is renowned for its spectacular topography and swim throughs. Following the dive, we take a short trip to the Wayag Ranger station, which is also a Black Tip Reef Shark breeding area. Here we will hopefully get the chance to do some snorkeling with these baby sharks under the ranger jetty, and also conduct a night dive on the same stretch of reef.

  • DAY 4: Kawe and Aljui Bay - In Kawe Island we will do 3 dives. Dive sites visited here are very heavily dependent on day-to-day unpredictable conditions such as swell, but one of our favourite sites in the area is Changgo, located on the equator in the east of Kawe Island. Black Rock, and Eagle Rock are both well known for their currents and their Manta populations, and we will dive these sites late morning and early afternoon. Around 4pm, La Galigo will move into Aljui Bay, one of the world’s most spectacular bays to watch the sunset, and also do some great muck diving, at sites such as the Fuel Dock or the Pearl Farm Jetty.

  • DAY 5: Gam and Western Dampier Strait - We wake up just off the coast in Gam Island. There are some great dive sites around this area with vibrant fish covered reefs and plenty of stunning macro subjects. Two sites we regularly visit in Gam are Mayhem and Citrus Ridge. As we have lunch we will cruise down to the Western Dampier Strait, to a dive site named Manta Ridge, for an opportunity to dive with the Manta ray population often located here . In the late afternoon we take a land tour onto the peaceful Arborek Island. The village itself is tranquil and surrounded by beautiful beaches. Arborek is also home to what we consider to be one of the best night dives in the world, Arborek Jetty, for a chance to find Walking Sharks, Blue ringed octopus, and many other critters.

  • DAY 6: Central Dampier Strait - Day 6 is almost like a highlights reel of Raja Ampat, and in the morning we often visit Cape Kri, with its schools of Barracudas and Snappers, as well as passing Manta Rays and Sharks. After Kri, we take a visit to another world class dive site, Blue magic, a submerged reef with Mantas and Giant Trevally nursing the currents, to Wobbegong sharks hiding under bommies. Our afternoon is often spent at either mikes point or Sardine, dependent on the currents in the area, but either dive site is memorable in it’s own right. The night is spent underneath Saonek Jetty, spotting critters in the seagrass.

  • DAY 7: Eastern Dampier Strait - On the penultimate day of the trip, we will repeat one of the guests favourite dive sites from the day before, then move onto Mioskon, for a shallow dive to allow you to gas off in time for your flight. The afternoon can be spent snorkeling, or relaxing on the beach whilst we prepare a beach BBQ, before setting course for Sorong around 11am.

  • Day 8: Disembark La Galigo at Sorong - From around 05:00am La Galigo will be anchored in Sorong in preparation for you to catch your flight, or check in to your hotel. Guests are welcome to stay onboard until 11:00am, whereupon we will assist you with transportation to your desired location.

Children smile and dance as the sun sets over tranquil villages, the perfect segway into a balmy night dive under the islands jetty, with an astonishing abundance of nocturnal marine life. The north is as much an amazing cultural experience, as it is a diving phenomenon. Take a trip to the outpost of Wayag ranger station. Here you will meet the local men who patrol the area down to Kawe. They make their home in the jungle behind a picture perfect white sand beach. Here you can sit and watch swarms of Black Tip Reef Sharks circle your feet. On the other side of Wayag, Mt Pindito stands watch over the manta nursery lagoon below.

Raja Ampat North Dive Sites

Here is a small selection of the most popular and well-known dive sites that we like to visit in the Raja Ampat area.

  • Mioskon - Mioskon island is located in the Dampier Strait, just south of the entrance to the area known as Kabul Bay. This site is normally pretty mild for current, and dips down to 25m. The site is basically a long ridge that runs towards the south east end of the island. Check out this site for plenty of the tasseled wobbegong sharks, and lined snappers.

  • Black Rock - Black Rock is a Raja Ampat dive sites distinguished by gorgeous soft coral gardens and schooling fish. Named for the pointed rock above the surface that marks the reef. Gorgeous soft coral gardens and schooling fish were the highlights of this site in the Misool area.

  • Eagle Rock - Eagle Rock is a over hang at around 20 meter’s Bommies, covered between 40 – 80 % with a lot of soft corals and a huge selection of Marine life such as: Butterfly -, Cardinal- and Angelfish, Grouper, Damselfish, Batfish, Wrasse, Parrot- and Surgeon fish, Triggers, Box- and Pufferfish, Porcupine Pontohi pygmy as well as schools of Manta Ray, Napoleon Wrasse, Schooling Baracuda, Jack Fish, Snappers and Sweatlips.

  • Manta Point - No points for guessing what we see at this site. A nice calm sandy bottom at this site, gives you the perfect place to kneel down and be amazed at the dancing Mantas display. The site consists of a handful of bommies on a sandy bottom, these bommies are a manta cleaning station.

  • Citrus Ridge - We drop into Citrus Ridge on the north east corner of Yanggefo island. The site is dived from west to east keeping the reef on the right hand side. As soon as you are in the water you will see that this reef is absolutely exploding with colour. Bright purple and orange soft corals dominate this site along its gentle slopes.

  • Melissa Garden - This dive site is the highlight of the Penemu area. A vast garden of plate coral beyond belief, covered in swarms of colourful fish. This site has a nice slope on one side of the rock protruding from the ocean, often with patrolling black tip reef sharks.

  • Kawe Island - Kawe Island has the highest altitude of all the smaller islands around Raja Ampat, and stands out for its relatively bare rocky surface compared to the other lush green islands. Kawe is located on the equator, allowing you to cross from the southern and northern hemispheres in the day. Strong currents are rewarded with reliable Manta’s and many pelagic‘s coming in to feed on the stream of abundant prey.

  • Cape Kri - Cape Kri – OMG. this site has the highest recorded fish count out of any reef in Raja Ampat. Schooling trevally, surgeons, fusiliers, emperors, and snappers absolutely surround you on this site. This is one of those dives that captivates you from the very beginning and leaves you astonished by the end.

  • Blue Magic - Blue magic is another of the signature Raja Ampat dive sites. This dive site always holds a special place in our hearts for us here at La Galigo, as this was the first dive site in Raja Ampat that we dived together as a company back in 2015.
